How to install Ubuntu 22.04 on MSI Titan GT77HX 13VI laptop

The difficulty for installing Ubuntu comes from the fact that this laptop comes with Intel RST and VMD pre-installed and enabled. When your laptop arrives to you from a computer shop, it has Windows 11 Home pre-installed on a RAID0 array of 2 SSDs. If you want to install Ubuntu on this laptop, don’t hurry to work in Windows: you’ll need to delete the RAID0 array first, thus deleting the Windows on it.

Go to https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 and download the tool for “Create Windows 11 Installation Media”. Follow its instruction to get a Windows installer on an USB. Your Windows 11 Home license key is saved somewhere in the laptop ROM, so you don’t need it written.

After that, go to BIOS and disable Intel RST, deleting the RAID array. Then in BIOS open the advanced menu as described here. Then go to tab Advanced, and there go to “System Agent (SA) Configuration” / “VMD Configuration”. Set “Enable VMD Controller” to Disabled. After that, Ubuntu sees the NVME drives and can be installed. You will then be able to install Windows as dual-boot from the USB stick you created.
